About Us
BAD Dogs (Bullies Are Deserving Dogs) is a program that took shape when we saw wonderful dogs sitting in the shelter, unadopted, simply because they were pit bulls. Based in a low income area of Jersey City, NJ over flowing with pit bulls, we understood that more adoptions means more education.

The Program
Public Education
BAD Dogs provides an array of materials to the public on topics such as breed info, responsible ownership, and spay/neuter resources. These materials are distributed locally and available at all BAD Dogs/LHS events, as well as the shelter.
Adoptions
BAD Dogs currently focuses on one pit bull at a time to find that perfect home. Selected dogs receive additional exercise and mental stimulation, counteracting the effects of a stressful shelter environment. Our dogs receive basic obedience training, using positive reinforcement methods. They also go on frequent outings to increase visibility and work on their social skills.
Adopters are provided with the necessary tools to continue to work with their new dogs, as well as a wealth of information on their new breed of choice and some fun take homes! And of course they get an outstanding companion and our heartfelt thanks.
What exactly is included?
When you adopt a BAD Dog, you not only get a companion for life, you get all of these goodies too: a bully strength toy, a leash and collar set (or head halter / harness when applicable), a full profile on your dog, a certificate of participation, a free check up with our shelter veterinarian, a comprehensive booklet on pit bull ownership, a free training session with a partnering training facility, and fun BAD Dogs promotional items. The adoption fees also include full vaccinations, a heartworm test, and spay/neuter surgery.

Shelter Resources
Working in such a heavily pit bull populated area, we have learned the ins and outs of a successful pit bull adoption policy. Many shelters do not have such experience and may find that pit bulls and all that goes along with them to be very difficult.
For those, BAD Dogs offers shelter specific advice and information. Topics we cover include evaluations, suitable homes, when to implement breed specific policies, and much more.
The Bullies Are Deserving Dogs program at the Liberty Humane Society is made possible in part by a grant from Animal Farm Foundation. For more information on Animal Farm Foundation and the wonderful work they do, visit www.animalfarmfoundation.org.
