Goodbye Foxie: A real deserving bully crosses the rainbow bridge

Most dog lovers in the Hoboken/Jersey City area have at least heard about Foxie, the amazing pit bull who was best friend to a homeless man in Hoboken. For those of us lucky enough to have met Foxie, it was truly a pleasure to know such a well adjusted, friendly dog. Not a mean bone in her body, she was her owner’s rock. The two were inseperable and it was obvious how much they loved each other.

B.A.D. Dogs learned today that Foxie was hit and killed by a car in Hoboken yesterday. Our thoughts go out to Randy, her owner, and we hope that Foxie is doing well on the other side of the bridge.

Please support the kind folks at Hoboken Animal Hospital who did so much to try and save an amazing dog. They are accepting donations to pay for the medical treatment they performed on Foxie at the following address: Hoboken Animal Hospital, 640 Washington St., Hoboken, NJ 07030, Attn. Robin.

This is the email we received about the incident:

Many of you may know Randy Vargas, who has lived, mostly outdoors, in
our town, for a long time, with his beloved, gentle pit bull, Foxie.
Today, tragically, Foxie was killed by a driver who reportedly didn’t
even stop after hitting her, as she crossed the street behind Randy.
While I did not bear witness to this horrible tragedy, Randy almost
always had Foxie leashed (not to mention dressed in layers for warmth)!

It was related to me that Hoboken Animal Hospital staff came to her
immediate rescue on the street, but her injuries were ultimately fatal.
They should be commended for their open-hearted efforts on her behalf.
As well, all the folks, over the years, who have helped to feed and
clothe Foxie (and Randy, as well)!

There, but for the grace of a higher power, go all of us, with our dogs
in tow….

Yet another dreadful—and in this case, deadly—example of the
out-of-control driving behaviors in Hoboken!

I know, from many conversations with Randy over the years, how deep his
bond has been with Foxie, even in the midst of his own struggles to
survive on the street.  He told me of rescuing her, some years ago, from
a group of folks who lived in the encampment on the rise to JC Hgts.,
who were beating and otherwise abusing her.  While it surely may have
been a tough existence for both of them, to not have a roof over their
heads, they have kept one another loved, warm and alive!  Now Randy has
lost an important grounding influence in his world and an
extraordinarily sweet example of an otherwise maligned breed has been
subjected to a senseless and painful death!

Prayers for Foxie, as she crosses the Rainbow Bridge.  And for Randy,
who is reportedly devastated.  When you see him on the street, please
offer him a smile and kind words if you can!
